About us

The Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering, also known as the Wyss Center, is an independent, not for profit organization that provides the expertise, facilities and resources to transform creative neuroscience research into clinical solutions that will improve the lives of people with nervous system disorders.

Our mission

Our mission is to accelerate the development of neurotechnology for human benefit.

Our model

Established by a generous donation from the Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss, the Wyss Center (pronounced “Veese”) presents a new model in translational neurotechnology research, offering competitively awarded support for projects that have the potential to make substantial clinical impact.
Through its resident experts, technology platforms and funding the Wyss Center identifies and fosters creative new technology-linked solutions to treat nervous system disorders.

The Center creates prototype devices suitable for humans, and then supports their development from preclinical to initial human clinical trials that will lead to commercialization to allow widespread benefit.

The Center’s integrated approach provides access to the latest neuroscience and engineering facilities, as well as the clinical, regulatory and business expertise required to guide high risk, high return projects on their journey from research to product.

Wyss Center projects

The Center supports innovative neurotechnology projects from anywhere in the world that fit the core mission to accelerate the development of neurotechnology for human benefit and can make full use of the Center’s capabilities and resources.

A major goal is to ensure that innovative neurotechnologies advance until they are sufficiently mature to attract industry partnerships, venture funding, or other mechanisms necessary to make them broadly available to society.

As a founding principle, all Wyss Center projects adhere to the highest ethical standards for the welfare of human participants and for the welfare of animals.

Wyss Center Neurotechnology Experts

The Wyss Center includes a unique interdisciplinary team of experts who are key members of all supported research projects.

This experienced multidisciplinary neurotechnology development team from industry and academia provides the integrated scientific, engineering, clinical, regulatory and business expertise required to guide high risk, high reward projects on their journey from research to product.

Campus Biotech

The Wyss Center is based at Campus Biotech, a new research and technology center of excellence in Geneva. In May 2013 Hansjörg Wyss, the Bertarelli family, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG) and the University of Geneva announced their intention to launch Campus Biotech in the modern complex created by the Serono biotechnology company.

The campus provides a unique collaborative environment for faculty, students, scientists and engineers in advanced research facilities for basic, translational and human clinical research, as well as space for startups and industrial partnerships.

This new community offers an interdisciplinary approach to scientific research and collaboration that positions the Lake Geneva region at the forefront of global neuroscience research and neurotechnology development.

Other Wyss organizations

The Wyss Center in Geneva focuses on neurotechnology for human applications while other Wyss funded organizations, including the Wyss Translational Center Zurich and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, each pursue independent missions united by Hansjörg Wyss’ vision to have a beneficial impact on the world

The Center encourages academic, clinical and industry partnerships related to neuroscience and neuroengineering that range from early concept, to preclinical validation, to critical proof of concept clinical trials and on to realization as a useful product.
