This cookie policy describes how the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuro Engineering (“Wyss Center”) and its partners use cookies and similar technologies such as pixel tags, web beacons, clear GIFs, JavaScript (“cookies”) in connection with email communications and the websites owned and controlled by the Wyss Center (the “Wyss Center Sites”).

Cookies may be used to collect information that is personally identifiable, or that can become personally identifiable if the Wyss Center combines it with other information. In such cases, the Wyss Center websites privacy policy will apply in addition to this cookie policy.

By using the Wyss Center Sites, you consent to the use of cookies in accordance with the terms of this cookie policy.

About cookies

Cookies are small files – usually made of letters and numbers – downloaded on to a device (computer, tablet, phone, or similar device) when you visit a website. Cookies allow a website to recognize a user’s device and are used by website owners to operate their websites more efficiently.

Cookies are used to understand how the site or service is being used, to help you navigate between pages efficiently, to help remember your preferences, and generally to improve your browsing experience. Cookies may also be used to deliver communications relevant to your interests, provided you have subscribed to these communications.

The Wyss Center and its service providers may use different types of cookies:

Necessary cookies. These cookies are essential for the operation of the Wyss Center Site. Disabling these cookies will encumber the Wyss Center Sites’ performance and may make the features and service unavailable.

Analytics cookies. These Cookies collect information about how you use the Wyss Center Sites for the purposes of improving and optimizing the way that the Wyss Center Sites work and to ensure that visitors can easily find the information they are looking for. For example, analytics cookies measure performance indicators such as which pages visitors go to most often and whether they get error messages from web pages.

Functionality/performance cookies. These cookies are used to recognize you when you return to the Wyss Center Sites. This enables the Wyss Center to personalize content for you, and remember your preferences (for example, your choice of language or region).

Communication, marketing and targeting cookies. These cookies record your online activities and retain user preferences, allowing those preferences to be used in future browsing sessions, in order to make the content displayed on the Wyss Center Sites more relevant to you and your interests. The Wyss Center and its third-party partners may also use these types of cookies to deliver communications relevant to your interests and to measure the effectiveness of communication campaigns. These cookies can remember that your device has visited a site or service, and may also be able to track your device’s browsing activity on sites or services other than the Wyss Center Sites. Marketing cookies are also used to track visitors across websites, for example videos embedded in the Wyss Center Sites via YouTube. This information may be collected by the service providers to deliver advertising.

Session and persistent cookies

Cookies may be either “persistent” or “session”. A persistent cookie will be stored by a web browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date, unless deleted by the user before the expiry date; while a session cookie will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed. The Wyss Center may use persistent cookies for storing your preferences so that they are available for the next visit, keep track of how often you visit the Wyss Center Sites, how you use the Wyss Center Sites, and the effectiveness of communication efforts.

The difference between first and third party cookies

Whether a cookie is ‘first’ or ‘third’ party refers to the website placing the cookie. First party cookies are cookies set by the Wyss Center Sites. Third party cookies are cookies that originate from websites or a domain other than the Wyss Center Site and for which www.wysscenter.ch has implemented ‘plug-ins’ or integrations. If a user visits a website and a separate company sets a cookie through that website this would be a third-party cookie. These third-parties are outside of the control of the Wyss Center and may, at any time, change their terms of service, purpose and use of cookies. Please see the privacy and cookie policies of those third parties directly.
