Alessandro Tonin

Alessandro Tonin joined the Wyss Center in February 2020 as Research Associate. He is responsible for designing and improving a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) for communication purposes focusing his work on signal processing optimization and improvement of final user experience. He is also in charge of recording BCI communication sessions and performing off-line analysis on the data.


Alessandro holds a master’s degree in Automation Engineering from Università degli Studi di Padova, Italy, and he is currently finishing a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Universität Tübingen, Germany. During his Ph.D., under the supervision of Prof. Niels Birbaumer, he focused on non-invasive BCI communication systems for ALS patients in an advanced stage of the disease. He published several papers, as coauthor, on different aspects of communication with ALS patients and published two papers, as first author, on novel non-invasive communication systems for these patients.
